Does this mean that the believer is free to murder, commit adultery, steal and so on? Of course not. ‘How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?’ (Rom. 6:2). The believer in Christ will avoid sin, but he will do so, not out of submission to the old covenant, but because he has died and risen again with Christ (Rom. 6:3–7). Christ died, says Paul, ‘that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who … walk … according to the Spirit’ (Rom. 8:4). Walking according to the
